Mariner Gallery, Newport's showcase for maritime art will host its grand opening on July 29th, with a whiskey and wine reception from 5:00 to 8:00pm, located at 267 Spring Street in a pre-1780 Colonial home. Andre and Peter Arguimbau, a dynamic father and son duo, led a two year refit, restoring the once captain's home. The gallery's ambitious program will host events and exhibit throughout the year. Our leading artists, Richard Loud, Russ Kramer, David Monteiro and Peter Layne Arguimbau, hang along 19th century fine art depicting historical and modern sailing events and seascapes in a traditional style.
In addition to restoring the post and beam construction and wide plank floors of the main gallery, Andre, a captain himself, built a lower deck of solid oak named the
USS Constellation Room. The room is constructed in honor of the second warship built for the U.S. Navy. The room will also serve as home to the Maritime League of the Arts. A
Summer Party will christen the hull August 26th, from 6:00 to 10:00pm. Richard Thursby, a lifetime sailor and student of maritime history, has been appointed Director.
