Peter Pennoyer Architects (PPA) is an award-winning practice in traditional architecture and is widely recognized as a leader in classicism and historic preservation.

Based in Manhattan and with an office in Miami, the firm has built a substantial and varied body of work across the United States and abroad for residential, commercial, and institutional commissions often involving historic buildings.

For almost three decades, Peter Pennoyer and his partners have grounded the firm’s projects in a forward-looking interpretation of history, believing that architectural practices in the past leave potent lessons that are relevant to contemporary architectural challenges.

Pennoyer, FAIA, his four partners – Elizabeth Graziolo, AIA, James Taylor, AIA, Jennifer Gerakaris, AIA, Thomas Nugent, AIA – and the firm’s Director of Design, Gregory Gilmartin, have shaped the practice around the proposition that architectural history is a valuable resource and consider each project a research challenge resting on a profound appreciation for and thorough knowledge of history and context.

Architects are encouraged to study and draw inspiration from the more than 10,000 volumes in the firm’s research library, resulting in designs that are a convergence of scholarship and creative invention.

“My colleagues and I look for poise and harmony in the connections between modern taste and great historical models,” Pennoyer says of the firm’s perspective. “This freshness of approach and light hand are apparent in the firm’s designs, which exhibit a wide-ranging command of styles.

“From the Shingle Style of New England to the Arts and Crafts tradition of the Pacific Coast, PPA absorbs the history and the vernacular of an area and remakes it to become its own,” he adds.

“Each project becomes a collaborative effort that synthesizes the premises of the commission, the voice of the client, and the creative talents of the architects, designers, and craftsmen.”

Peter Pennoyer Architects has been widely published in newspapers, books, and periodicals and is listed in Architectural Digest’s AD100.

Pennoyer received both his undergraduate degree and his Master of Architecture from Columbia University and is a registered architect in New York, California, Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia.
