Jay Paul Company is pleased to introduce designs by internationally renowned Orlando Diaz-Azcuy for its first urban luxury development, and most highly anticipated project to date, 181 Fremont Residences.  Celebrated as one of the world’s greatest design talents, Diaz-Azcuy drew on a rich history of masterful interior design to create his career crowning achievement, the resplendent interiors of 181 Fremont.

Ascending more than 800 feet into the sky with a state-of-the-art exoskeleton designed in a saw tooth pattern, 181 Fremont will be the centerpiece of the new downtown, and reaffirm San Francisco as a global city on the forefront of innovation and design. As part of its decision to select a San Francisco-based team with deep international expertise, Jay Paul Company chose to collaborate with Diaz-Azcuy – considered one of the most respected and awarded designers for his elegant, disciplined, and intelligent work.

“181 Fremont was created to be the most luxurious expression of living that the City of San Francisco has ever seen, and the design by Orlando is a cornerstone of this transcendence,” said Matt Lituchy, CIO of Jay Paul Company.

Alan Mark, president of The Mark Company commented, “There is no other building that offers this level of extraordinary personalized design combined with otherworldly views of San Francisco.  Not only will residents enjoy Orlando’s magnificent interiors within the communal spaces, they will have the exclusive opportunity to live in a condominium home that has been custom designed by one of the world’s masters.”

Diaz-Azcuy set out with a goal of fusing old world craftsmanship with the modern luxury a true global citizen has come to expect.  He spent the last three years thoughtfully designing the dramatically grand lobby, a full floor amenities Sky Lounge on the 52nd floor, and each of the 55 custom condominium homes on the building’s top 16 floors. The romanticism of San Francisco is echoed in the interior design, creating a stunningly spare canvas from which to draw upon the richness of the city.

“I found inspiration in timeless materials, natural luxury, and the history of San Francisco,” said Diaz-Azcuy, founder, ODADA.  “The care and quality that went into even the smallest details of this building make the greatest impact – it is the ultimate expression of luxury.”

The designer directed a global expedition to source the finest materials and finishes. Classical materials inspired 181 Fremont’s luxurious interiors. The desire was to create a sense of natural comfort with the surroundings, accentuated with touches of the extraordinary, all starting with the lobby.

The Dramatic Residential Lobby

Diaz-Azcuy continued, “To enter the lobby of this building is like walking into a living sculpture.”

Twenty-five feet tall, the lobby of 181 will feature custom-designed sconces and a sprawling banquette seating area Diaz-Azcuy personally designed to receive visitors. The banquette area will be set beneath a gold leaf dome. Suspended overhead, a flowing fabric shade – which was hand sketched by Orlando before being custom built – will gently cast an otherworldly light into the lobby upon entry.

The Amenities Sky Lounge

The unparalleled view delivered by the 181 Fremont Residences will begin on the 52nd floor. Designed to be festive with pops of color on each of the four corners, there, residents will find a full floor of amenity and communal gathering spaces, including a fitness center with yoga room, three distinctive lounge spaces, a library, conference room, bar, and catering kitchen, plus a wrap-around observation terrace.

Exclusive Custom Condominium Homes

181 Fremont is a boutique building for only 55 original owners each with its own layout and personalized design by Diaz-Azcuy. The renowned designer leveraged decades worth of inspirations, learnings, and a mastering of his craft to inform the designs for each of the homes before finalizing custom floorplans that are modern yet comfortable, providing the ideal foundation for residents’ individual expressions. Twelve additional accessory suites will also be available for purchase by building owners for expansive possibilities.

For residents of 181 Fremont, walking through the front door will be like crossing a threshold into another world. The elevator interiors will present a touch of whimsy, with an off-kilter black and white floor.  The effect is incredible and unexpected.  Once the doors open, the unveiling begins. A custom, plush striped carpet will guide the path, with an oversize mirrr at the ready.  Polished Calacatta Carrara marble from Italy will frame each residence entryway, with doors encased in a Paldao wood sustainably sourced from New Guinea, delivering an unprecedented sense of arrival.

The front door handles were one of the first items selected to finish the interiors of 181 Fremont. A polished brass handle custom-crafted by Parisian artisans Série Rare will grace the front door of each residence. An art piece in and of itself, the brass handle will turn with the weight and heft of a grand landmark’s entryway.

Each residence will feature an entry foyer to receive guests in a graceful setting before welcoming them into the living spaces.

The kitchens at 181 Fremont will be as beautiful as they are functional, with Valcucine glass cabinets crafted in Italy and making their West Coast debut.  Select kitchens can be hidden from sight on a whim with a set of ceruse-ebonized oak sliding panels.  Large enough to handle any entertaining occasion, the materials chosen bring intimate warmth to the room.

No Stone Unturned

Polished Italian Calacatta Carrara marble was selected for its distinct beauty. Diaz-Azcuy and his team spent months in Italy, selecting the marble slabs by hand, ensuring perfection.  Taken directly from the seaside quarry cliffs, each massive block is unearthed then fed into a giant cutting machine to create working slabs. An intricate crosscut satin finish was chosen to reflect an old world style of luxury.  Rather than the current trend of favoring stone with little or no veining, these full slabs are cut against the grain to provide depth and texture, with the natural veining telling a beautiful origin story that befits the stone’s rich Italian heritage.

Other extraordinary touches include indulgent soaking tubs on heated marble floors in the master bath; powder rooms featuring elegant fixtures by Toto and Duravit, with walls covered in Nara beige porcelain tile, Gascogne blue stone tile flooring, and a Breccia Versilia polished stone slab vanity; French oak floors given a seven-day fumed treatment for a superior, warm feel meeting museum finish walls that will allow for frameless doorways and a clean baseline with no molding; and stepped cove ceilings that will bring gracious light into living rooms, bathing walls in a light ideal for showcasing one’s art collection.

Let There Be Light

The hallway sconces at 181 Fremont began as hand-drawn sketches, inspired by a bird’s nest. Since the sconces are based on drawings and intricate natural shapes, it required an artisan manufacturing process. As a result, each one is completely unique.
