Under new leadership following Informa’s acquisition of Dwell on Design, the show returned to the Los Angeles Convention Center June 24–26, 2016 for its 11th year. This innovative 3-day event welcomed attendees and participants from around the world for a celebration and exploration of modern design through on-stage presentations, Prius Ride and Drives, Home Tours, ASID Learning Labs, and inspiring exhibitions. Dwell on Design LA offered continuous content from more than 90 leaders in design, 2,000 modern furnishings and products from 300 exhibitors, as well as continuing education opportunities across four distinct design disciplines.
DWELL ON DESIGN 2016 HIGHLIGHTS:
Keynote Speaker Sou Fujimoto—Japanese Architect Sou Fujimoto kicked off Dwell on Design on Friday, June 24th to a packed audience of trade members and included an inspiring keynote about his influential work.
The Dwell Platform was an added newcomer to the show floor—featuring four iconic Dwell rooms, with opportunities for attendees to interact with other individuals and brands. Attendees had their photo taken in their favorite rooms and were able to share their experiences digitally by using the hashtag #dwellhere.
The Designers & Books Fair was another must-see space where attendees could browse and shop the best in architecture and design-centric books. Participating publishers included Actar-D, AMMO BOOKS, Paintbox Press, Phaidon, and RAM.
Toyota joined Dwell on Design for the first time as a premier sponsor and hosted the Prius Ride and Drive, allowing attendees the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the all-new Toyota Prius to experience its superior design.
ON-STAGE PROGRAMMING
Dwell on Design LA 2016 on-stage programming focused on four design-centric content tracks— Business of Design, Healthy Architecture, The Smartest Home/New Technology, and Nice Modernist.
Some of the brightest, most forward-thinking minds in design joined Dwell to celebrate raising the?level of discourse with topics that included: “Made In L.A.”, “Affordable Housing Meets European-Style Sustainability”, “Alternative Careers in Architecture”, “Rethinking Los Angeles: Future Vision”, “New Face of Affluence Survey: Designing for Today’s Affluent Consumer”, “Designing Brand Identity from Scratch”, and “Eco-Unconscious: Regulating Energy Consumption with Smart Tech”.

LA HOME TOURS AND MEET THE ARCHITECTS
The Home Tours had record attendance and provided visitors exclusive inside access to some of the most remarkable modern homes found throughout Los Angeles.
Two Meet the Architects Nights, sponsored by Sage and TOTO, allowed attendees to hear the inspiration, challenges, and creative processes from the architects and designers behind the featured homes of the Home Tours.
SHOW FLOOR FEATURES
Dwell Outdoor transformed more than 30,000 square feet into a botanical lounge and oasis. The exhibition featured the ever-popular Beer Garden, hundreds of hanging succulents and plants curated by award-winning landscape designer, Jamie Durie, as well as prefab structures including the Signature Kitchen Suite LivingHomes by Plant Prefab, the Monogram Modern Home, the Haier Home by Cocoon9, and a tiny home presented by SMUD’s Tiny House Competition.
The show floor included two main stages, crowd-pleasing exhibitions, and cash and carry opportunities. A few highlights included Fluidstance work boards where attendees could test their balance; Signature Kitchen Suite brand ambassadors Lo Bosworth and June Ambrose hosting cooking demonstrations with live painting by artist Donald Robertson; Living Spaces brewing up espresso and other libations;
the fusion of digital art with furniture by Modify; custom chairs and skateboards by RAD Furniture; the popular Monogram Modern Home; and an adorable playhouse by Folk Art Playhouses for the younger attendees.
American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) hosted ELEVATE at Dwell on Design LA 2016. The ELEVATE experience showed how ASID supports all aspects of health and wellbeing including physical health (encouraging attendees to dance with the DJ at the ASID lounge), social health (fostering networking between attendees while coloring), and mental health (providing six one-hour IDCEC accredited sessions
at the ASID Learning Lounge on the show floor). Students attending DODLA were treated to the ASID Student Roadmap, where experienced designers demonstrated how to engage with industry partners at tradeshows, and the ASID Career Exchange, where they were given expert advice on their resumes, portfolios, and received information on design career paths from industry professionals.
Another Dwell on Design LA show floor first, the Prime Edition pavilion featured studio-based designers and artists who produce custom, one-of-a-kind, and limited-edition works. The Best of Prime Edition awards were presented on Friday, June 24 in two categories:
