Born in a small town in Nova Scotia, Russell Groves spent his formative years in the metropolitan area of New York. It was this exposure to both rugged landscape and city skyline that established a design vocabulary combining a reverence of nature with a highly sophisticated design sensibility.
Russell received his Architecture degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. There, his education encompassed a rigorous and broad range of illustrative subjects, including fashion design, filmmaking, cultural history, and literature. This multi-faceted approach created the foundation for a keen insight into a wide array of design disciplines.
Dedicated to his profession, Russell’s career began at Richard Meier Architects, followed by tenure at Kohn Pederson Fox.
Soon after, he joined Peter Marino Architects as a Project Architect, where he created and managed commissions for an array of top clients, including Giorgio Armani, Donna Karan and Barneys New York. It was these major assignments that honed his ability to synthesize the various creative disciplines.
The success of his first project, the innovative design for the Tea Box at Takashimaya, received a prestigious American Institute of Architects award and launched his eponymous firm, S. Russell Groves.
With offices in New York, East Hampton and Los Angeles, the firm’s collective knowledge transcends the conventional boundaries of design; close interaction with engineers and artisans alike generates innovative methods and exceptional results.
